28th hound killed in '16 WI bear hunt 'training' by wolves

The death toll among bear hunting hounds continues to rise: On Aug. 31 - - the last day of the state's legal bear hound 'training' period - - the Department of Natural Resources said by email today that the year's 28th bear hound was killed by wolves in Wisconsin.

The dog, a Bluetick like the one below, was also the 25th bear hound killed just this month by wolves in Wisconsin.

Bear hounders can collect up to $2,500 per killed dog from a DNR fund in a Wisconsin-only reimbursement program even if the dogs were released off-leash in known wolf activity areas where hounders can legally plant bear bait that can also attract wolves.
