Police summon Al-Jazeera crew to obtain more info on baby-selling activities

PUTRAJAYA - Police have summoned the production crew of international television station, Al-Jazeera, to seek more information concerning its documentary on alleged baby-selling activities in Malaysia.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the ministry will liaise with the Foreign Ministry for further action as it involves international media.

She said other relevant ministries and agencies such as Home Ministry and National Registration Department will also be involved in the investigation.

“We need more information, such as on whether the babies were adopted or used for other purposes like sexual crimes, trade or sale of organs,” she said.

Rohani said the actual situation in Malaysia is not as depicted in the report, which made it appear as if it is easy to sell babies in the country.

“We do not deny that such cases have occurred before, but it is not rampant. It occurred three years ago; the culprits have been arrested and the babies have also been rescued,” she told a press conference today.

Rohani’s was responding to a Al-Jazeera’s report titled ‘Malaysia: Baby For Sale' which the station broadcast recently. She said police have also set up a special unit to probe the issue.
