My elect-expel-replace Roy Moore hypothesis

In yesterday's post, I suggested the notion that the GOP's best option at this point may be to pull the following, with a sort of a wink-and-a-nod.  Make it clear to voters that if they vote for Roy Moore, the Senate will expel him, thereby allowing Republican Governor Kay Ivey to appoint a Republican replacement.  That way, the GOP gets someone who is neither a Democrat (like Doug Jones) nor a child rapist (like Roy Moore).  That's the only realistic path for the GOP to get someone who is neither a Democrat nor a child rapist.

I'm not the only one thinking along these lines.  Ed Kilgore, over at New York Magazine, is thinking the same thing.

Does that mean I'm right?  No, but I'm not alone thinking about this stuff...

As of right now, Jones has a lead over Moore in the betting odds at PredictIt, but there's a new poll conducted entirely on Monday with 3000 likely voters with Moore holding a 6 point lead over Jones, putting Moore's RCP polling lead at 3 points.

As a general rule, I tend to defer to the betting markets, but I have a really hard time seeing how Alabama votes for Jones.  He's a Democrat.  Roy Moore is a mentally defective, bible-thumping demagogue.  Which way does Alabama vote?  It takes a hell of a lot for Alabama to vote for a Democrat over a mentally defective, bible-thumping demagogue.  Is child rape enough?  We'll see, but as I wrote over the weekend, an authentic social conservative really should still vote for Roy Moore anyway, and if you're being honest, put yourself in a similar position, and you could bring yourself to do something similar.
