Another hunting hound has been injured and two more "depredated" killed after their hunter-owners, presumably after bears, put the dogs in harm's way in wolf territory, the DNR reports.
Hunting Dogs Depredated in Forest, Lincoln, and Price Counties
USDA-Wildlife Services has confirmed the following wolf depredations:
- On 9/18/18 a Plott hunting dog was injured by wolves in the Town of Laona, Forest County.
- On 9/23/18 a Redtick hunting dog was depredated by wolves in the Town of Tomahawk, Lincoln County.
- On 9/23/18 a Plott hunting dog was depredated by wolves in the Town of Fifield, Price County.

One of the 'depredated' dogs in this most recent group was a Redtick hound like this one.

Fourteen hounds have been killed in this fashion this year in Wisconsin and another thirteen injured: each can bring their owners a state payment of up to $2,500 in an only-in-Wisconsin public reimbursement program.

...hunters can collect up to $2,500 from the DNR for each such dog lost, even if the dog was allowed to run off-leash in known wolf activity areas, or if the owner was a repeat payment collector - - even a scofflaw.
The program also reimburses livestock and pets owners for animals killed by wolves, but owners of hunting dogs have received the most money, a DNR record shows.
