One of the things political pundits always get wrong about politics in the GOP is how real the danger of a primary challenge is. One of the key pieces of evidence they usually cite is Bob Bennett's 2010 loss. Bennett never lost a primary. Utah has screwy rules, and he got blocked from the ballot at a nominating convention. Utah is doing interesting things again. Pay attention to rules. They matter.
