Moscow Times: Russia’s Pandemic Excess Death Toll Passes 460K
Country continues to be one of the world’s hardest hit, as Moscow reports growing case numbers. Russia recorded more than 460,000 excess deaths during the first 12 months of the coronavirus pandemic, according to analysis of official statistics published by the Rosstat federal statistics agency.
In its latest report published Friday, Rosstat data showed 38,000 more people died in March 2021 compared to the same month in 2020 — the last time the country reported numbers of deaths close to what would be expected.
That was a 25% increase in fatalities — a larger jump than the 20% increase reported in February, even as case numbers were falling dramatically during the first three months of the year. It comes as hospital staff, epidemiologists and officials have warned the country could already be in the midst of an unreported third wave of the pandemic. Read more ....
WNU Editor: According to John Hopkins 109,000 Russians have died because of Covid-19 (link here). According to Russian media and government stats, and one that I believe, they are quoting numbers closer to 400,000.
